This one-day course looks at the roles of green roofs and green retaining walls in aiding drainage and managing storm water, with an opportunity to take part in practical sessions during the afternoon. Delivered in association with Steve Humberstone of ABG Environmental Geosythetics
Landscape architects, consultants, engineers, specialist contractors
Presentations and practical sessions
With issues such as biodiversity, storm water management & site waste management plans becoming ever more prevalent there is a requirement to take an even closer look at modern sustainable methods of construction.
The one-day course will consist of 2 distinct parts:
AM: Green Roofs
The morning session will focus upon basic principles, design considerations and solutions with specific focus on green roofs.
PM: Green Retaining Walls
The afternoon session will focus upon design and installation of green retaining wall systems, with a move away from traditional stone gabion and concrete systems.
Both the morning and afternoon will contain a practical session with focus on installation of each system i.e. a chance to get yours hands dirty!

Steve Humberstone is Divisional Manager for Sustainable Building at ABG Ltd - a UK based manufacturer and supplier of specialist geosynthetic materials, who first became involved in Green Roof projects approximately 20 years ago when developing and launching their own range of products specifically with Green Roofs in mind. Since then they have supplied over 1,000,000 m² of geocomposite drainage for both extensive & intensive Green Roofing projects to projects throughout the UK, Ireland & mainland Europe.
ABG are working to develop a UK specific Green Roof which is tailored to the geographical location and climatic conditions for the UK. Development partnerships have been established with the University of Sheffield, The University of East London and Groundwork UK, to investigate and develop the environmental benefits of Green Roofs and provide guidelines and training on best practice. ABG are also developing a UK system with native plants to encourage local biodiversity with focus on sustainable drainage systems. These will consider the hydrology and maximise the attenuation of water to encourage plant survival and growth whilst alleviating storm water run off.
